Chapter 8:
Last winter, my father passed away due to illness.
In accordance with his wishes, the funeral was simple and only a few old comrades were notified.
Uncle He, tall and strong with a fierce appearance, wiped away tears at the memorial service.
Auntie He told me to spend the New Year at their house from now on.
After all, I grew up eating at their house when I was a child.
They didn't tell Hefang.
During that time, Hefang was preparing for a competition.
It wasn't adoption since I was already twenty, and we didn't have any blood or legal relationship.
So, Hefang and I couldn't really be considered siblings.
The elders referred to him as the 'big brother' just to have him take care of me.
Similar to how the chubby kid next door who is in junior high school also calls Hefang 'big brother.' It's just a polite form of address.
I can also choose not to call him that.
But I just wanted to see Hefang's frustrated expression.
At the New Year's Eve dinner table, I chatted with Uncle He and Auntie He.
Auntie asked, 'Zhizhi, where is that physics major boyfriend of yours?' Hefang paused with his chopsticks.
I replied, 'We broke up.' 'Huh? Weren't you still together last month? I even planned on inviting him to our house for dinner so that Uncle He and I can evaluate him for you.' 'Thank you, Auntie, but we broke up half a month ago.' 'It's okay, it's okay,' Auntie He said to prevent me from getting upset, 'there are many young guys at my workplace, I can introduce them to you.' 'Mom!' Hefang loudly interrupted, throwing down his chopsticks, 'The fish is too salty.' Auntie rolled her eyes, 'If you don't want to eat it, then don't.
Next time, make it yourself.' She then turned her head back to me and continued talking about potential partners.
I smiled and said, 'I don't have high requirements for appearances, Auntie.
As long as the person is good, I like someone with a good temperament and humility, not excessively arrogant or conceited.' 'Auntie understands.
You like someone who is completely opposite to Hefang,' Auntie commented.
Hefang threw down his chopsticks again, saying, 'Zhilin, you're going too far.'"
"I pretended to be surprised and asked, 'Why would you say that, big brother?' 'Who is your brother! You cunning and treacherous woman!' He didn't dare to continue speaking.
After all, it wasn't something to be proud of.
After dinner, the elders went to sleep.
I didn't want to be alone with He Fang, so I went back to my room early.
At two in the morning, feeling a bit hungry, I went to the living room to find a snack.
Without turning on the light, I walked towards the coffee table and accidentally bumped my leg.
It hurt so much that I couldn't stand steady.
As I was about to fall to the side, a hand suddenly held me.
I fell into a warm embrace.
He Fang's breath was warm and gentle in my ear, saying, 'Do you want to hurt yourself?' 'Why aren't you sleeping?' 'Thinking about the issues during the day.' '...What issues?' 'Was I happy playing with me, Wen Zhi? You haven't answered me yet.' How should I answer that? In the darkness, I could only see the contours of He Fang's face.
Like a meticulously crafted silhouette, it was already very attractive.
I had to admit that compared to three years ago, He Fang had become even more handsome.
Maybe he had matured a bit, but still retained his youthful charm, especially during these carefree moments.
I replied, 'I can't answer because I've never played with you.' Three years ago, I just wanted to find some justification for myself.
How could that be considered playing? But He Fang didn't understand.
He let out a cold 'hmph.' 'Fine, He Fang, if you really want to hear the answer,' after thinking for a moment, I generously said, 'Then let me play with you now?'
