Chapter 3:
Princess Yong'an has always been lawless.
She is the emperor's younger sister, and when he was still the sixth prince, they relied on each other during those difficult times.
They were each other's only source of warmth.
Later, the sixth prince ascended to become the current emperor, and he vowed to give his sister the best of everything.
When Princess Yong'an wanted to eat lychees, the emperor sent dozens of horses to deliver a basket of fresh lychees.
When Princess Yong'an wanted to watch animal shows, he gathered rare and exotic animals from all over, even using the expenses reserved for the empress's birthday feast just to make the princess smile.
As for the cruel death of a mere imperial beast, it meant even less to the emperor.
As long as his sister was happy, anything was permissible.
However, today Princess Yong'an was not happy.
She was originally practicing calligraphy with the emperor in the study, while I was outside preparing ink.
Suddenly, I heard the princess slam a teacup onto the ground and burst into sharp cries.
"Marquis! I'm being forced to accept a marquis! How many times do I have to say that I won't marry? I want to spend my whole life with my imperial brother!" The emperor's voice sounded anxious.
"Someone, the princess's hand is injured." I immediately lowered my head silently and entered, kneeling in front of the princess and helping her bandage her wounded hand.
The emperor's voice softened.
"Does it hurt?" Princess Yong'an sobbed, "It doesn't hurt as much as my heart without Yong'an." She cried and grabbed the emperor's sleeve.
"Imperial brother, you promised to stay with Yong'an forever, but in the end, you still made someone empress." The emperor rubbed his temples wearily.
"That was the empress dowager's decision.
I couldn't defy it.
And Yong'an, why don't you think about it? In this world, is there an emperor who doesn't have a harem and only stays with the princess? If that were the case, the future historians wouldn't know how to portray you.
I'm also doing it for your reputation." Princess Yong'an cried out, "I don't care what others say! I only want my imperial brother!" She struggled as she cried, and I had to continuously adjust my kneeling position to bandage her delicate fingers.
Broken porcelain shards stabbed into my leg, but I remained silent and wholeheartedly tended to her.
When I stood up, my skirts were stained with red.
The emperor unintentionally glanced at it, his gaze flickering slightly.
I remained silent and continued to stand outside, attending to them, when the emperor and princess were together.
And when Princess Yong'an threw a tantrum, I silently cleaned up after her.
It took me almost half a year to reach this point.
At first, when I first entered the palace to serve, the palace maids who were already by the princess's side often bullied me.
They said, "What a despicable woman.
Just because she raised a bird, she thinks she's on top of the world?" "Just wait, the next time the princess is in a bad mood, I'll be the first to needle her." The princess indeed had a habit of needling others.
Whenever the emperor didn't come to see her in time, or when he went to the empress's palace, she would fly into a rage and find someone to take her anger out on.
She would randomly choose one of the palace maids or eunuchs around her, bind them, and use long silver needles to prick them.
The more they cried out in pain, the more the princess's bad mood would be vented.
Those maid servants who were jealous of me deliberately pushed me forward during one of the princess's fits of anger.
When the silver needles pierced my body, there was no expression on my face.
I was calm and motionless, like still water.
The princess was surprised, "Why aren't you screaming?" I replied bluntly, "Reporting to the princess, this servant was born without the ability to feel pain." In reality, I did feel pain.
But I knew that if I wanted to survive the princess's torture, I had only one path - to deprive her of the pleasure of tormenting me.
She wanted to hear you scream in pain, to watch you struggle and beg for mercy, but when you remained calm and unaffected, she naturally found it uninteresting.
I asked the princess, "Does the princess want to prick again? Since this servant doesn't feel pain, the princess can prick me a few more times to vent her frustrations." Princess Yong'an put down the silver needle, uninterestedly saying, "Forget it, it's not fun anymore.
Find someone else." So the maidservant who had planned to frame me was bound instead.
She cried out miserably, her nose running and tears streaming down, until she finally passed out.
Princess Yong'an looked at her with disgust, "Last time, she seduced my older brother with her eyes while serving him fruit, right? She thought she was pretty? Bring her to the well, I want to see how her little face looks after it's soaked in well water." The maidservants by Princess Yong'an's side seldom lived for long.
So after staying there for a year, I had unexpectedly become one of the oldest maids with qualifications beside her.
The newly arrived maids would respectfully call me "Sister Lanqiu".
But I was not completely safe either.
The day I finished bandaging Princess Yong'an's hand, the emperor came out, lowered his eyes, and glanced at my injured leg.
"What is your name?" the emperor asked.
I replied, "This servant's name is Lanqiu." The emperor nodded and didn't say anything more, then left.
When I turned around, I saw Princess Yong'an staring at me.
In reality, the emperor probably only asked casually.
But it brought disaster to a palace maid.
That night, Princess Yong'an called me over.
She smiled and said, "Lanqiu, I have found a good job for you."
