Chapter 43
Finale
"You know too much, I can't let you live," Alexander revealed a fierce look in his eyes.
"Burning me alive is too crude of a method.
The police will catch you," Benjamin said.
"No, they won't.
The police will think you set fire to the scene and accidentally burned yourself."
Alexander paused for a moment and showed an evil smile, "What's important is that I want you to experience the pain of meddling and taste the flavor of death." He opened the pot lid and slowly poured the gasoline on the ground.
"As long as you're dead, no one will know that I killed Sophia.
The police will close the case quickly, and no one will know it was me who killed someone."
As the gasoline flowed, Benjamin quickly moved his body backward.
"The truth cannot be concealed!"
The gasoline had completely poured onto the ground.
Alexander picked up the candle, opened the door, and stepped back.
Then he threw the candle on the ground.
With a "boom," the gasoline ignited after it touched a spark.
A wall of fire separated him and Benjamin, and he waved his hand to Benjamin, saying, "Goodbye, Detective."
Benjamin had learned from Emma how to quickly untie ropes, but it was a bit more troublesome to apply it now.
Luckily, he managed to free himself from the ropes.
By now, the fire had spread completely, and the front door was engulfed in flames, trapping him inside the room.
Since it was impossible to leave from the front, he had no choice but to find another way out.
He turned and rushed into the bedroom, closing the bedroom door and temporarily blocking the flames outside.
"Whooosh, whooosh," the flames flickered through the crack in the door, emitting a terrifying sound.
"Wooo, wooo," the police sirens wailed as Benjamin opened the window and saw several police cars parked below, with officers rushing towards the building.
"Bang!" Under the attack of the fire, the bedroom door finally collapsed onto the floor, and the flames immediately engulfed the items inside.
The fire was too fierce, and Benjamin couldn't hold on until the police arrived to extinguish it.
He had to take a risk.
Clinging to the window frame, he stood on the windowsill.
Although the distance to the balcony across was only two meters, the height was enough to make one's legs weak.
He glanced back and saw the fire rushing towards him.
There was no time left.
He took a deep breath and leaped towards the opposite balcony.
With a "smack," he rolled onto the balcony, seemingly not as difficult as he had imagined.
He sat on the balcony, relieved, his gaze fixed on the flames emerging from the window he just jumped out of.
If he had been a moment later, he would have had no way out.
"What are you doing? Why are you arresting me?" Alexander's voice came from the hallway.
"Cuff him first," James ordered, then asked eagerly, "Where's Benjamin?"
"I haven't seen him.
He should still be inside," a police officer replied.
"What? What are you all waiting for? Hurry up and put out the fire!"
"Captain, the fire is too big.
There's no way to extinguish it!"
"No, it must be put out.
Benjamin is still inside! Benjamin, can you hear me? It's James!"
"Captain, what are you going to do? You can't go in!"
"Let me go, I have to go save him!" Benjamin stood up.
He couldn't stay here any longer, or James would really rush into the inferno to find him.
He opened the bedroom door and happened to see James being pulled by two police officers.
He hurriedly called out, "Hey, I'm here."
"Benjamin!" James was taken aback, his gaze shifting between Benjamin and the completely engulfed Room 601, then he broke free from his companions and rushed over, grabbing Benjamin's arms.
"Is it really you?"
"It's me."
"You scared me to death.
I thought you were burned to death!"
"I'm not dead yet," Benjamin said, glancing at Alexander, who was being held in the hallway.
Alexander was also very surprised and stared at Benjamin, exclaiming, "You're not dead?"
"How did you escape?" James asked eagerly.
"Do you remember how he left the scene?" Benjamin pointed at Alexander.
"Did you also jump from the window to the balcony of Room 602?" James immediately realized.
Benjamin nodded and said, "In a sense, he saved me."
"Well, as long as you're safe, it doesn't matter how you got out," James sighed with relief.
The waves of heat from the raging fire could be felt in the hallway.
It was no longer safe to stay here.
He instructed the officers, "Take the suspect back!"
"Yes!"
"The officer escorted Alexander downstairs, with the others following behind.
'Move aside, make way!' Just as Benjamin and the others arrived downstairs, they saw Emma squeezing her way through the crowd.
'Hey, Emma!' Benjamin quickly greeted her, knowing what awaited him.
Emma circled around Benjamin twice and exclaimed, 'Are you okay?' 'I'm fine.
How did you know I was here?' Benjamin asked.
'Because of this.' Emma took out a valuable necklace from her pocket.
'You put it in my pocket, right?' Benjamin nodded.
He had placed the necklace in Emma's pocket when leaving the hospital.
'After I found it, I called James and learned that you had come here!' Emma said, glaring at James standing on the side.
'Weren't you two having a falling out?' 'That was just an act,' James chuckled dryly.
He didn't want to offend this woman before him.
'An act?' Emma frowned.
Benjamin explained, 'Remember the text message I sent using your phone at the police station? It was meant for James, and I told him to do that.' 'No wonder he had a drastic change in mood after going to the restroom,' Emma glared at James again.
'We did it all to deceive the killer, to make him let his guard down,' Benjamin said.
'But you deceived me too!' Emma shouted, 'Great Detective, I am your assistant.
If you have something to do, you should come to me.
But instead, you informed the police.
If I hadn't found this necklace, I would still be like a fool in the hospital!' 'The fewer people who know about this plan, the better.
In fact, after the press conference, I gave you many clues.
For example, you said you wouldn't work with James again, and I said maybe.
Also, I made you stay at the hospital to protect Big Ma...' Benjamin saw Emma's fierce gaze and knew he should stop.
'Why aren't you saying anything?' Emma asked fiercely.
'There's nothing more to say,' Benjamin didn't want to provoke this tigress, raising his hands, 'I was wrong this time.
Don't be angry.
How about I treat you to a drink?' 'Where are we going?' Emma wasn't really angry at Benjamin, she just felt that he should have informed her beforehand about what he was going to do.
'The usual place,' Benjamin replied.
'Isabella?' Emma inquired.
'I have a drink there waiting for me,' Benjamin said, making his way through the crowd.
'Hey, wait for me,' Emma caught up, 'Tell me honestly, when did you first suspect that Alexander was the killer?' 'The first time I saw him,' Benjamin said.
'What?' Emma looked at Benjamin in amazement.
Perhaps, other than Benjamin, no one would suspect him as the killer the first time they saw Alexander."
"After testing him, we discovered some flaws in his story." "Is that so?" "Do you remember when we talked to Aunt Ava and encountered him on our way back to the police station?" "I remember, but what's wrong with that?" "He was following us the whole time.
As soon as we left the Northshore neighborhood, the person who tried to run me over with his car was him.
Then he followed us back to the police station, pretending to have coincidentally bumped into us.
At that time, I only mentioned that the killer jumped from the window to the neighboring balcony, and he immediately pointed out that there was a two-meter gap between them.
If he wasn't the killer, how did he know that so precisely?" "Maybe he observed it from below.
After all, he came to the neighborhood looking for Sophia and knew the distance between the two houses.
There's nothing strange about it." "Even if that's the case.
Afterward, he left in a hurry.
By the time the police arrived at the crime scene, the footprints had already been cleaned up.
The time gap wasn't long, so besides him, who had just received the news not long ago, who else could have rushed to the scene and cleaned up the footprints?" "Did you already know he would do this?" "Why else would I have asked you to take photos and keep records of those footprints?" "Is there more?" "Later, we encountered him again at the hospital.
He was there to gather intelligence, deliberately pretending to have a broken arm to confuse us.
In reality, his arm was fine, and he only pretended to hide the bite marks from Aunt Ava while also seeking an opportunity to attack her again." "How much do you actually know?" "A lot.
Let's go, we can discuss it further at the bar." As Benjamin and Emma left, the fire truck had already arrived.
The police thoroughly searched Alexander's house that night and found the stolen jewelry of the deceased.
The next day, Aunt Ava and Noah separately went to the police station to identify Alexander.
With the additional evidence found by Benjamin and the police, Alexander had no choice but to confess.
