Chapter 24:
Interrogating Olivia
"You have such a strong smell, why don't you take a cab back later?" Emma said, covering her nose, as if James himself was a piece of garbage.
James didn't care about the smell as long as he found important evidence.
After the garbage truck left, he said to Benjamin and Emma, "Let's go back to the police station." "Are you sure this gauze was used by Ethan's wife? What if someone else in the neighborhood got injured and this gauze was used by them?" Emma said.
No one could be certain that the gauze in front of them was used by Olivia.
James paused and turned to look at Benjamin.
"Don't look at me, I didn't promise that the gauze you found must be from Olivia," Benjamin said.
"Then why did you make me search in the garbage cans?" James angrily exclaimed.
He had spent so much time digging through the trash, and if the gauze he found wasn't discarded by Olivia, then it would all be in vain.
"Do you have any other way to get Olivia's DNA?" "But we can't be sure that this gauze was used by Olivia!" "That depends on your luck, or you can listen to me and directly go arrest Olivia for questioning." "Fine, let's see how lucky I am," James reluctantly said.
He didn't want to take the risk of grabbing Olivia, he had already tried before, but couldn't even enter the neighborhood.
Apart from finding this gauze in the trash, he had no way to obtain Olivia's DNA sample.
After returning to the police station, he handed over the gauze to the technicians and anxiously waited for the results.
When the technician came out of the room, he immediately greeted them.
"How was it, is the DNA a match?" "I extracted DNA from the gauze you brought, and after comparing it, it confirmed that it is completely identical to the DNA found under Sophia's nails.
They belong to the same person." "That's great!" James jumped up excitedly and turned to Benjamin and Emma, shouting, "Let's go, we're going to arrest her now!"
"Are you not worried that the bandage is not Olivia's?" Emma asked intentionally.
James smiled and said, "If it's not hers, then whose could it be? The bandage was found among the garbage in the same neighborhood.
The probability of two people getting injured at the same time in the same neighborhood is very small.
Even if it's not Olivia's, it still proves that the culprit is hiding in the neighborhood.
Let's go.
If we worry too much, we won't be able to solve the case."
"It seems he has grown up," Emma smiled at Benjamin.
The arrest warrant was immediately applied for, and James gathered personnel to head to the neighborhood where Olivia lives.
At the entrance of the neighborhood, they were stopped by security guards again.
"What are you trying to do?" the security guard arrogantly shouted.
"This is Olivia's arrest warrant!" James took out the warrant and said.
The security guard didn't even bother to look at the arrest warrant.
He stopped James and said, "Wait here, I need to contact the owner to see if I can let you in."
"To hell with you and your contacts!" James shouted.
He had already figured out how to vent his anger beforehand, and now was the chance.
He turned to his subordinates and shouted, "Arrest him, charge him with obstructing official duties!"
Without saying a word, several police officers immediately approached and pinned the security guard to the ground, handcuffing him.
Interestingly, even at this point, the security guard continued to shout, "Without the owner's consent, you cannot enter!"
James shouted at the other security guards, "Does anyone else want to block my way?"
The remaining security guards obediently stepped aside.
They knew the police meant business; nobody wanted to be charged with obstructing official duties.
The security guard inside obviously received the notification from the security guard at the gate and had already opened the building's password door, letting James and the others in directly.
When Olivia opened the door and saw a crowd of police officers outside, her body trembled slightly, her face turned pale, and she appeared very nervous.
However, she quickly calmed herself down, put on a stern face, and asked, "What do you want?"
James placed the arrest warrant in front of Olivia and said, "I now suspect that you are related to Sophia's death.
We will take you back for investigation.
This is the arrest warrant."
"Ridiculous! Are you saying I killed that bitch?" Olivia exclaimed loudly, half of which was to cover up her fear inside.
"Yes, I am formally accusing you of murder."
"What evidence do you have to say that I killed her? I want to find a lawyer!"
"Ma'am, finding a lawyer is your right, but I want to inform you that we have already extracted your DNA and compared it with the skin residue under the victim's nails.
The two DNA samples are a perfect match, confirming that you had contact with her and engaged in a fierce struggle with her before her death."
"What?!" Olivia's legs went weak, and she sat down on the ground.
"Take her away!" James ordered.
Two police officers approached and lifted Olivia up from the ground, handcuffed her, and smoothly escorted her to the police station.
Benjamin and Emma witnessed the entire process of the police arresting Olivia and followed them to the police station to participate in Olivia's interrogation.
Olivia has been sitting there with her head down, expressionless, and deathly still, only regaining a bit of liveliness when the interrogation began.
"Olivia," James called out.
Olivia looked up at James, her pale face devoid of any trace of arrogance.
"Do you know Sophia?" James asked.
"Yes, she is my husband Ethan's secretary," Olivia replied weakly.
"Do you know about their affair?" "Yes." "How did you find out?" "One time when I went to my husband's company, I accidentally overheard the employees talking about it, and that's how I found out that Sophia was my husband's mistress." "Does your husband Ethan know about this?" "No, he doesn't." "Do you know where they live?" "Apartment 601, Building 5, in the North Shore neighborhood." "How did you find out?" "I followed them there." "Did you confront Sophia?" "Yes." "When?" "Around 7 o'clock the night before last." "What did you go there for?" "I wanted to negotiate with Sophia, hoping she would willingly leave my husband." "Did you have an argument?" "Yes.
She refused to leave my husband and even insulted me, calling me an old hag, so we ended up fighting." "During the argument, did you kill her?" Olivia suddenly lowered her head and burst into tears, emotionally shouting, "I didn't mean to! I just wanted to teach her a lesson, but I never expected her to die.
Please believe me, I never planned to kill her.
I just wanted her to leave my husband!" "Describe in detail what happened that day," James said.
"Ever since I found out that Sophia was my husband's mistress, I became angrier and angrier.
I don't know why, but that day I ended up going to the North Shore neighborhood.
I arrived at Building 5 and knocked on the door of Apartment 601.
I hesitated a bit, and even thought about leaving after knocking, but when Sophia opened the door, all I had left was rage.
I cursed at her and told her to stay away from my husband, but she insulted me back, calling me an old hag.
I couldn't bear it, so I slapped her.
If she hadn't fought back, I would have said a few more words and left, but she hit me back.
I don't know what happened, but I pushed her with force, and she fell to the ground.
At first, I thought she was pretending to be dead to scare me, but then I saw the bloodstains on the coffee table and realized that when she fell, she hit the back of her head on the table and bled all over the floor.
I was genuinely frightened at that moment, my mind went blank, and I only thought about leaving before anyone discovered me.
After I got home, I had a drink and gradually calmed down." At this point, everything Olivia said perfectly matched William's account, but James was somewhat unsatisfied.
If the situation was really just like this, the case would once again be at a standstill, and the identity of the murderer would remain a mystery.
"Did you encounter anyone on your way back?" James deliberately reminded, wanting Olivia to mention Ethan's name so that the case could develop according to his own plan.
"I don't know, I don't know anything."
"I said, my mind was blank at that time, and I don't even remember how I got back," Olivia shook her head desperately, trying to shake off the fear in her heart.
"After returning home, did you not go out again and did not make any phone calls to anyone?" James continued to ask.
"I didn't leave home again, you can ask the security guards in the neighborhood about this," Olivia didn't realize that James was trying to entice her, "I did consider confessing by making a phone call, but there was still a glimmer of hope in my heart that you wouldn't find out it was me who killed the person." "You also didn't tell your husband Ethan about this?" "No, I didn't tell anyone." "When did you see Ethan again?" "I haven't seen him for a long time.
If it wasn't for you finding me yesterday, I wouldn't have known that you had already arrested him.
Honestly, when you first found me, I thought you were going to arrest me.
But when I found out you had arrested my husband and believed he killed Sophia, there was still a glimmer of hope in my heart that things would pass like that.
I didn't expect that in the end, you still caught me." "Alright.
I will detain you for now.
If you remember anything, you can tell me." "Okay." James instructed his subordinates to take Olivia away.
When there were only him, Benjamin, and Emma in the room, he finally exploded, throwing the previously recorded confession on the table and shouting, "Nonsense, this is simply nonsense, it's all fucking nonsense!"
