Chapter 35:
- Hospital Turmoil
'We've arrived, get out of the car,' James said as he opened the car door.
He had kept Benjamin and Emma within his line of sight, fearing that they would try to escape.
Aunt Ava had just been pushed out of the emergency room, her head wrapped in bandages, lying on the hospital bed to rest.
Benjamin and the others first found the attending physician and inquired about Aunt Ava's condition.
They learned that her injuries were not serious, just a slight shock, and she would be fine after resting for a while.
Mr.
Daniel anxiously guarded Aunt Ava's bedside, worrying that she might leave him like this.
He kept muttering about which wicked soul would commit such an act.
Aside from Aunt Ava and Mr.
Daniel, there was an unexpected person in the hospital room, William."
He originally stood beside Grandpa Daniel.
When Benjamin, Emma, and James entered, he appeared extremely nervous and took a few steps back, standing in the corner.
"Mr.
Policeman, you finally came," Grandpa Daniel stepped forward and grabbed James' hand, excitedly exclaiming, "This is a murder case.
Someone wanted to kill my wife.
You must catch the killer!" James glanced at Grandma Ava lying on the hospital bed and said, "We will investigate the nature of this case.
Can we ask you a few questions now?" Aunt Ava was indeed a bit startled, and her mental state did not seem to be very good.
However, upon hearing James' question, she still straightened herself up and said, "Go ahead." "Aunt Ava, what time were you attacked?" James asked.
"I'm not quite sure.
I walked out of my house when I heard the police siren.
I wanted to see what was going on, but I didn't expect to be knocked out by someone.
That despicable person even took away my gold necklace." Aunt Ava instinctively reached out and touched the gold necklace around her neck.
She almost lost it.
"This is the necklace my old man gave me when we got married.
It weighs a full twenty grams and is the most valuable piece of jewelry I own!" James frowned.
He knew when he received the report that Aunt Ava was attacked while they were in the neighborhood.
At this moment, he just wanted to confirm it.
The culprit not only didn't choose to escape when the police arrived in the neighborhood, but also hid in the flower pot and took the opportunity to attack Aunt Ava.
The case happened right under the police's nose.
It was a blatant provocation from the culprit.
"Oh, so it's an ordinary robbery case?" "No, I don't think so." Aunt Ava shifted her gaze to Benjamin, raised her voice, and said, "Do you remember the man I mentioned? I recognize him.
He's the one who attacked me.
He must have wanted to kill me to silence me!" "Are you sure it's him?" Benjamin asked.
"Of course I'm sure.
Even if he turned into ashes, I would recognize him!" Aunt Ava yelled, "The important thing is that guy warned me not to say anything in front of the police before he left.
Besides him, who else would threaten me like that?" James turned to Benjamin and asked, "Who are you talking about?" "The mysterious man I told you about.
He might be the real murderer of Sophia," Benjamin explained.
"This is a murder case.
That guy wants to kill and silence people!" Grandpa Daniel shouted from the side, "You must catch him as soon as possible and assign someone to protect my wife for 24 hours, otherwise, he will cause us more trouble!" "Do you believe us now?" Emma yelled at James.
James frowned and thought for a moment.
"Okay.
Let's consider this a murder case.
The person who attacked Aunt Ava is the killer of Sophia.
If he really wanted to kill Aunt Ava to silence her, then how could she still be lying here? I mean, he would never let Aunt Ava live.
This simply cannot be explained."
"I can only say that I'm lucky.
If I wasn't saved by someone, I would be dead by now," Aunt Ava glared at James.
"Someone saved you? Who was it?" James asked.
"Him," Aunt Ava turned her head towards William, who was standing in the corner.
"You?" James fixed his gaze on William.
William was already very nervous, and now being stared at by everyone, he trembled in fear and said in a low voice, "Yes, it was me." It was a remarkable coincidence that William saved Aunt Ava, which made James suspicious.
"William, why did you suddenly appear in the North Shore community and coincidentally save Aunt Ava?" "I originally wanted to go back and take a look," William lowered his head.
He knew what James was thinking - that he was part of the group who attacked Aunt Ava, and even that he was the one who attacked her.
"Go back and take a look where?" James asked.
"Sophia's house." "You mean the crime scene?" "Yes." "Why?" "I felt guilty.
I always thought she died when she fell to the ground, but later I heard you guys say that she only passed out at that time.
If I had called the police or taken her to the hospital, she wouldn't have died.
So I feel particularly sorry for her.
It was my fault that she died." "Alright.
Let's put that issue aside for now and talk about how you saved Aunt Ava." "I originally wanted to go back and take a look, but when I saw the police car parked downstairs, I didn't go up." William began from the beginning, trying not to make any mistakes.
"Just as I was about to leave, I suddenly heard Aunt Ava's scream and saw someone hitting her with something, so I stepped in." "The attacker had a weapon, how did you stop him?" "Actually, I didn't do much.
I just shouted, 'What are you doing?' and that person turned and ran!" "So you mean you didn't even fight with the attacker?" "Yes.
The person ran away as soon as they saw me, and I didn't even see what they looked like.
Later, when I saw Aunt Ava's head bleeding, I informed Mr.
Daniel and together we took Aunt Ava to the hospital.
I also called the police on the way." James felt disappointed when he heard that William didn't see what the attacker looked like, and he asked Aunt Ava, "Did you see what the person who attacked you looked like?" "It was already dark then, and facing that situation, who would have the mind to look at the person's appearance? I was scared out of my wits," Aunt Ava said.
"So, you also don't know what the person looks like?" "That's right." "This is troublesome.
If none of you saw the attacker's appearance, it won't be easy to catch him." "Although I didn't see the guy's face clearly, I left a mark on him." "A mark?" "Yes.
When that guy hit me, I grabbed his right hand and bit down on his arm.
So all you have to do is find a guy with an injured right arm." "That might not be so easy."
"Rest assured, we will do our best to capture this person and ensure that he does not escape justice," James said, turning to Benjamin and Emma.
"Do you have any questions?"
Benjamin approached William and said, "I have a few questions for you." Knowing that Benjamin was not a police officer, William was not as scared as before and nodded, saying, "Go ahead."
"You are the security guard of the North Shore community, so it can be said that you have seen everyone who enters and exits the community, right?"
"You could say that."
"According to Aunt Ava, on the day of Sophia's murder, there was another mysterious man at the scene.
He went upstairs after you left.
Did you notice anything suspicious at that time?"
"No.
I was scared and just wanted to leave as soon as possible.
I don't even know who I ran into on the way."
"Aunt Ava once saw a man asking for money from Sophia.
Their relationship seemed strained, and initially, Sophia didn't want to give him any money, but later she ended up giving him all her money.
Did she ever mention such a person to you?"
"No, she hardly ever mentioned other men in front of me."
"Have you ever noticed a man who is not very tall, slightly thin, and seems to have a wealthy appearance visiting Sophia?"
"No."
Benjamin glanced at Emma.
He was asking these questions just to confirm his own speculation to Emma.
Sophia was usually very cautious and wouldn't let her lovers know each other.
"I have no more questions."
Looking at James timidly, William whispered, "If there's nothing else, I'd like to go back now.
My grandfather is waiting for me at home, and he's very worried."
"Remember, without our permission, you cannot leave the city freely.
You have to be available whenever summoned," James reminded him.
"I remember," William nodded.
"Alright, you can go now," James said.
After William left, Benjamin and Emma also bid farewell to Aunt Ava and Uncle Daniel.
Before leaving, James once again promised the two elderly individuals that they would definitely catch the attacker who assaulted Aunt Ava.
Then the three of them discussed the case in the hospital corridor.
"Now we can be sure that the mysterious person is the killer.
He cleared away the evidence he left at the crime scene before the police arrived, and then he hid in the flower bed and attacked Aunt Ava, attempting to kill her and silence her!" Emma said.
"No, I don't think so," James said, with a slightly heavy expression.
"I still believe that the attack on Aunt Ava is just a regular robbery case and we shouldn't mix the two."
"A regular robbery case?" Benjamin shook his head.
"Then how do you explain what the perpetrator said before leaving?"
"That's right.
The perpetrator threatened Aunt Ava not to speak out in the future, indicating that he is worried that she will accuse him," Emma exclaimed.
How can this guy's brain not turn around? Does he still think that Ethan and his wife are the murderers? James looked at the two of them and said in a deep voice, "It's just that simple.
You all know, Aunt Ava has the nickname 'News Broadcast'.
She always speaks without restraint and must have offended someone to be retaliated against." "The person who retaliated against her also happened to want to snatch her gold necklace?" Emma said mockingly.
"This might be an accident, or the culprit's spontaneous idea," James said.
"Don't forget, you were both upstairs at the time.
If this person was only retaliating against Aunt Ava, then it's too bold for him to act under the eyes of the police, isn't it?" "Now it seems that he is indeed very bold." "Then how do you explain what happened upstairs? That guy pried open two doors and destroyed the evidence." "Who can be sure that they were done by the same person?" "Not done by the same person? Don't forget about the iron rod.
It had Aunt Ava's blood stains and wood shavings from the upstairs door.
Doesn't that prove it was done by the same person?" "I said it might be a coincidence.
The one who pried the door threw the iron rod and gloves into the flower pond, and the person who attacked Aunt Ava happened to pick up these things and used them to attack her." "You really are stupid.
Where in the world does such a coincidence exist? If it's really such a coincidence, then you tell me who pried open the upstairs door?" Emma couldn't help but curse, and as soon as she finished speaking, she saw James looking at her and Benjamin with a suspicious look, and exclaimed in surprise, "Oh my god, you still suspect that Benjamin and I destroyed the crime scene?" "Until the case is cleared, anyone is a suspect," James said.
"You're an idiot!" Emma cursed again.
Seeing that Emma and James were about to argue in the hospital corridor, Benjamin suddenly stared at the opposite side and shouted, "Look, who is that?"
