Chapter 10:
Searching the Wu Household
Benjamin picked up a receipt and examined it.
It was a receipt for purchasing jewelry, and there were also receipts for purchasing valuable items.
He remembered the secretary mentioning that Ethan often falsified accounts to deceive money from his wife.
Now, it seemed that Ethan had hidden the real receipts here.
He put the receipts back into the jewelry box and said, "You better keep these things.
They might be important evidence."
James accepted Benjamin's suggestion.
If these receipts weren't important, Ethan wouldn't have hidden them so discreetly.
They must have some value to exploit, and James couldn't let this trip go to waste.
After leaving Da Yong Real Estate Company, James couldn't help but complain, muttering under his breath, "Damn it, wasting so much time and not finding anything."
"I actually think we made a significant discovery on this trip," Benjamin said.
"What did you find?" James looked at Benjamin excitedly, hoping he had found something he had missed.
Benjamin repeated what he had extracted from the secretary.
"Brother, we're investigating a murder case, not some affair," James said, somewhat disappointed.
He didn't care about Ethan's escapades; he wanted evidence to convict Ethan.
"Weren't you suspecting Ethan of being the killer? Then we shouldn't overlook any details.
The receipts in your hand could be vital evidence," Benjamin said.
"Are you saying these things can prove that guy murdered someone?" James looked at the jewelry box in his hand, unable to see any connection between these things and a homicide.
"Think about it.
Ethan is notorious for being afraid of his wife, yet he falsifies accounts to deceive her money while indulging in extramarital affairs.
What do you think would happen if his wife found out?" Benjamin explained.
"She would either break up with him or get killed," James replied.
James widened his eyes, his mind quickly processing Benjamin's words.
"Oh my god, why didn't I think of this? That must be it.
Ethan's wife found out about his falsifying accounts and having a mistress, so she threatened him to kill the mistress.
Let's go quickly to his house.
There must be something waiting for us there!"
After James got in the car, Emma quietly asked Benjamin, "Do you really think it's Ethan's wife who forced him to kill Sophia?"
"I just said it's a possibility," Benjamin's smile betrayed him.
He didn't actually believe it.
"Hey, why are you still standing there? Get in the car!" James stuck his head out of the car and shouted.
"Let's go."
"Benjamin opened the car door and got in with Emma.
Ethan's house was in the most luxurious district of the city, where only the rich and famous resided.
The residential area was filled with surveillance cameras, and security guards patrolled twenty-four hours a day.
Without the permission of the owners, no one could enter the community.
Benjamin and the others were stopped at the entrance by a security guard.
The guard did not let them in just because James was a police officer, but instead asked, 'Have you obtained permission from the owner?'
"Damn it!" James was annoyed by the guard's attitude and took out a search warrant.
'Look at this, it's a search warrant! We can search any part of Ethan's house without anyone's permission!'
"But the security guard didn't bother to look at the warrant and still arrogantly said, 'You guys wait here for a moment, let me contact the owner and see if she allows you to enter.' He took out the walkie-talkie and informed the other security guards inside.
After a while, he told Benjamin and the others, 'You are lucky.
The owner is at home, and she agrees to let you in.'
"Only then were Benjamin and the others allowed to enter the community.
James drove inside while cursing, 'What a joke, they act like they have the final say.
Sooner or later, I will make these security guards regret it!'
"'Actually, you can't blame them.
They are just doing their duty.
You also need to think about who lives here and who they can offend,' Emma advised.
"James snorted coldly, and the anger in his heart still lingered.
When he parked the car in front of Ethan's building, he realized how difficult it was to enter Ethan's house.
The building's entrance actually had fingerprint locks, which meant that without the owner's fingerprint, they couldn't enter at all.
Fortunately, a security guard had been waiting there and knew they had received permission from the owner, so he opened the door and let the three of them in.
"The security guard led the three of them to Ethan's door like they were guarding against thieves.
After ringing the doorbell, a middle-aged woman opened the door.
She appeared slightly wealthy, dressed in exquisite clothing, and wore a pair of large sunglasses.
She had a bandage wrapped around her right wrist.
The security guard glanced at Benjamin and the others and said, 'Mrs.
Wu, if you have any trouble, please contact us anytime.'
"'I understand,' Mrs.
Wu thanked the security guard and turned to Benjamin and the others.
'So, it's you who want to see me?'
"'Are you Ethan's wife?' James asked.
"'Yes, I'm Olivia,' Olivia replied while observing the three of them, trying to guess the purpose of their visit.
"'I am a police officer.
This is my identification, and this is a search warrant.
We need to search your house,' James said, showing his credentials.
"Olivia's body trembled slightly, and her face instantly turned pale.
Her expressions and movements became stiff.
She stepped aside and said, 'Please come in.'
"'Mrs.
Wu, I apologize for disturbing you.
This is necessary for my work.
Please forgive me,' James entered the house and turned to speak.
"'I understand,' Olivia nodded."
She looked very strange, like a prisoner on trial, uncomfortable all over.
Ethan, as expected of a rich man, had a living room of over 100 square meters, decorated in a degree of luxury that was hard to imagine.
James spent a full hour searching but still didn't find everything.
Meanwhile, Benjamin walked around, looking for an opportunity to chat with Olivia.
"Mrs.
Wu, how long have you been married to your husband?" Benjamin asked.
"Eighteen years," Olivia stood there blankly, her eyes lifeless, as if someone had put her to sleep.
She didn't even know what to say.
"It seems like you have a loving relationship," Benjamin commented.
"Yes." "Why aren't there any pictures of your children here?" Benjamin noticed that the room was filled with pictures of Ethan and Olivia, but there wasn't a single picture of their children.
"I had an accident when I was young and couldn't conceive," Olivia explained.
"I'm sorry to hear that." Olivia shifted her gaze to James, who was inspecting the drawers, and asked, "What are you looking for?" "You seem to be unaware of what has happened," Benjamin said.
"I think you will tell me everything." Olivia looked back at Benjamin.
"Your husband has been arrested," Benjamin broke the news.
"What?" Olivia exclaimed in surprise.
Benjamin noticed a change in Olivia's expression for the first time.
Upon hearing the news of her husband's arrest, she completely transformed.
Before, she looked like a deflated balloon, but now, it seemed like someone had injected her with air, giving her a bit of vitality.
"He is suspected of a murder case.
This morning, someone found the body of your husband's secretary Sophia in the river.
The police found your husband's car with Sophia's bloodstains in it, and he admitted to disposing of Sophia's body," Benjamin conveyed.
"What?" Olivia exclaimed in astonishment once again.
Benjamin noticed Olivia's expression change for the second time.
This time, in addition to surprise, there was also shock, making her come alive.
"The police suspect your husband of murder and disposal of the body," Benjamin repeated his previous words as simply as possible.
"Are you saying that my husband killed his secretary?" Olivia asked.
"Yes.
Now all the evidence points to your husband, and with his admission, the police have reason to suspect him as the murderer," Benjamin observed Olivia's third expression change.
She seemed to breathe a sigh of relief, and the surprise and shock on her face gave way to a faint joy.
Immediately after, she covered up all these changes with an expression of anger.
"Nonsense! You are defaming him! How could my husband possibly kill his secretary? I'm calling a lawyer!" Olivia shouted.
She was formidable, completely hiding her true thoughts.
"Tell me, what exactly are you looking for here? Evidence of my husband's murder?"
"Ha, this is really ridiculous.
I will make you all pay for your mistakes!" "When the deceased was found, their jewelry was missing.
The police suspect that your husband hid them after committing the murder," Benjamin said.
"Are you saying here?" "That's what the police think." "I can tell you, you won't find anything here.
You are just wasting taxpayers' money.
It would be best for you to leave now, or I will call my lawyer!" Just then, James excitedly ran out from the inner room, holding a golden necklace in his hand, and shouted excitedly, "I found it, I found it!" "That's mine!" Olivia, like an angry mother tiger, pounced towards James and snatched the necklace back.
James quickly hid the necklace behind his back and threatened, "Ma'am, if you attempt to destroy evidence, I will sue you!" "What, you're going to sue me?" Olivia ran towards the bedroom and quickly came back with a jewelry box in her arms.
She opened the jewelry box and dumped all the jewelry on the floor, shouting angrily, "If you're only looking for jewelry, then I have plenty here.
See which one is the vixen's!" There must be more hidden places in the room to put these things.
James didn't find them before, but now it saved him a lot of trouble.
He squatted down and picked up all the jewelry.
"Thank you for your cooperation.
I will take these jewelry back for investigation." Benjamin saw that Olivia wanted to continue arguing with James, suddenly asked, "Mrs.
Wu, do you know Sophia?" "I don't know her." Olivia looked at Benjamin alertly, like a mother tiger surrounded by hunters, trying to protect herself while preparing to attack at any time.
"She is your husband's secretary.
You should have met her." "My husband's company has so many people, there are over a dozen secretaries alone.
Is it necessary for me to know every single one of them?" "Alright." Benjamin said to James, "Can we leave now?" "Of course." James said while holding the jewelry box.
"This isn't over.
I will bring a lawyer to the police station to find you!" Olivia said as the three left.
