Chapter 22:
Olivia's Suspicions
William licked his lips nervously and said, "Alright, I'll tell you.
I did lie before.
That day, Sophia called me into her room and said she wanted to invite Ethan for one last meal and ask him for more money.
If he didn't give it to her, she threatened to teach him a lesson.
Officer, I'm telling the truth.
I didn't want to continue with Sophia's blackmailing schemes, and I was thinking of leaving.
But for some unknown reason, I inexplicably stayed."
"Go on," James exclaimed.
"I remember Sophia prepared many dishes, waiting for Ethan.
Suddenly, we heard footsteps in the hallway.
She thought it was Ethan and told me to hide in the wardrobe.
I knew it wasn't Ethan because the footsteps sounded different, and Ethan had a key so there was no need to knock.
Through the crack in the wardrobe door, I saw a middle-aged woman coming in, dressed very stylishly, not like someone from our neighborhood."
"A woman?" James turned to Benjamin and gave him a look.
Benjamin had mentioned that the fourth person was a woman, and now it seemed completely correct.
"It was a woman," William repeated, thinking James hadn't heard clearly.
"Continue," James urged.
William continued, "As soon as the woman entered, she started arguing with Sophia.
In the midst of their argument, I realized that woman was Ethan's wife."
"You mean Olivia?" James exclaimed in surprise.
No wonder her behavior was so strange.
It turned out she was also connected to Sophia's death.
She was the fourth person.
"I don't know her name.
She just said she was Ethan's wife," William said.
James turned to Benjamin.
Yes, he must have known all along that this fourth person was Olivia.
He always seemed to know everything.
"Continue.
What was Ethan's wife doing there, and what happened next?"
William said, "Ethan's wife called Sophia a seductress, and said she would sue her in court, telling Sophia to stop bothering Ethan.
Sophia retaliated by calling Ethan's wife an old hag, and then they started fighting.
Suddenly, Sophia was pushed to the ground, and Ethan's wife hurriedly left.
When I came out of the wardrobe, I found Sophia lying motionless on the ground, blood everywhere.
That's when I realized Ethan's wife had killed Sophia."
"You're saying Ethan's wife killed Sophia?" James was somewhat surprised.
"Yes.
I witnessed the fight between the two of them, and after Ethan's wife pushed Sophia to the ground, Sophia died," William said.
"What were you doing at the time? Why didn't you call the police, and why didn't you confess all this earlier?" James pressed on.
"I...
I..." William nervously replied, "I was scared."
"Scared? What were you afraid of?"
"James frowned.
'I never thought it would lead to someone's death.
At that time, all I could think about was me and Sophia extorting Ethan.
I was worried about getting involved, so I ran away,' William said softly, feeling pathetic even to himself.
James felt a sense of anger.
'Then why didn't you mention this later?' 'I was afraid you would suspect that I killed Sophia, especially since I was there,' William explained.
'You coward,' James couldn't help but curse.
William didn't report the incident right away or speak up earlier because of his own fear and selfishness.
If what he said is true, then Sophia might still be alive if he had been more calm and called the police.
'Do you remember what time it was?' Benjamin asked at this moment.
Unlike James, he could remain calm.
'What?' William didn't hear clearly what Benjamin said.
Benjamin repeated, 'I'm asking if you remember what time Ethan's wife had a dispute with Sophia, and what time it was when you left?' William thought for a moment and replied, 'It should have been around seven o'clock.
The news was playing on TV at that time.' 'You can take him away now,' Benjamin suddenly said to James.
William became agitated and yelled, 'Officer, I've said everything I needed to.
I have absolutely nothing else to hide.
Can this be considered meritorious? What I mean is, if you catch the killer, can you consider it as my contribution and not pursue the extortion I did to Ethan?' 'Let's wait until the case is solved!' James said impatiently, and had William taken away.
Then he turned to Benjamin.
From the current situation, what William said was completely consistent with Benjamin's previous reasoning, so his words were likely true.
'Do you have something to say?' Benjamin knew James must have many questions for him.
'Do you believe what that guy said?' James asked.
'I can't find a reason to doubt him.' 'So that means Olivia is the fourth person.
She had a dispute with Sophia and pushed her, accidentally hitting the corner of the coffee table?' 'That seems to be the case.' 'Do you think we should arrest Olivia?' Benjamin stared at James.
Since the case began, James had been restless, never caring about anything, just wanting to catch the killer.
But now, he was clearly different from before.
'Are you scared? Are you worried that what William said isn't true, and that if we arrest the wrong person, Olivia will sue us?' 'You've met her too.
She's a wealthy person who can afford the best lawyers in town.
I just don't want to arrest the wrong person,' James said.
'Is Ethan considered wealthy? Can he afford the best lawyers in town? Yet you still arrested him.'"
"Benjamin wanted to boost James' confidence.
"That's different.
Ethan was arrested because we found solid evidence linking him to the victim's death, but now, other than William's testimony, I have no evidence about Olivia," James reasoned for himself.
At this stage of the case, he became increasingly cautious.
"I believe you also noticed that Olivia was still wearing sunglasses in the house.
Do you know why?" Benjamin asked.
"Why?" James inquired, finding it indeed strange.
"She has injuries on her face, and she wears sunglasses to avoid being seen by others.
Additionally, there is bandaging on her right wrist, which was probably caused during her altercation with Sophia.
Let's go arrest her; I guarantee we won't be wrong," Benjamin made a promise, wanting James to take immediate action.
"If those injuries are really caused by the altercation with Sophia, then the skin flakes under Sophia's nails should belong to Olivia.
Once we manage to obtain Olivia's DNA sample and compare it, confirming they belong to the same person, we can arrest her," James suggested.
Benjamin sighed; it seemed James was intimidated by Olivia's previous commotion at the police station.
Helplessly, he said, "Alright.
Let's do it your way first, find a way to obtain Olivia's DNA sample." "Great, I'll arrange it right away!" James felt as if he had been released.
He convinced Benjamin, meaning he wasn't wrong.
Excitedly, he ran out and soon found Benjamin and Emma.
Together, they drove to the residential area where Olivia lived.
