Chapter 10:
The Orphanage.
Because I didn't know much about Chen Yuan, I had always passively received information, but just now, I felt that something was off.
Hearing this, I finally realized what was wrong — it was in Chen Yuan's personal history.
A colleague had told me that Chen Yuan was an orphan.
And in Chen Yuan's story, his father had already left early on, and his mother was still present until now.
I had a very bad feeling.
Chen Yuan had mentioned that his father left because he was afraid of him.
Setting aside Chen Yuan's own account, I really didn't know much about him, I hadn't even looked at his file.
I went out and asked a colleague to bring me Chen Yuan's file, then returned to my desk and continued.
"The orphanage is a good place," Chen Yuan sighed, "It's very free there, nobody controls you.
The children in the orphanage envy me, but I also envy them." "You said you envy the orphans, is that right?" I confirmed slowly.
Chen Yuan repeatedly emphasized that his mother suppressed him, his mother shackled him, his mother was his burden, preventing him from smoothly embarking on a criminal path.
He also said that he envies orphans.
Blood rushed to my head, "Chen Yuan, be clear about what you've done." "What do you think?" "You're a demon, you're born a demon..." It's unimaginable that such people truly exist in the world, they don't even deserve to be called human.
"Am I a demon?" Chen Yuan retorted.
"I have no way out either..." Chen Yuan said softly, his eyes becoming extremely dim.
"Once, I also had a happy family.
Once, I was a good child, intelligent and obedient.
My parents loved me, everyone praised me.
They said I had a bright future, that I would enter a good university, have a good job, get married, have children, and be filial to my parents.
"But everything changed on the day of my second year of junior high.
That person destroyed my world.
My father refused to help me and abandoned me; my mother, what does she understand? She only knows how to constantly pressure me.
I am left all alone, isolated and helpless.
No one knows how desperate and miserable I am.
"My mother brought me here and there, making me watch the execution of a criminal, forcing me to undergo psychological therapy.
For her, I endured despair and pain, lived a normal life.
I entered junior high, then high school, all to satisfy her.
But has anyone ever cared about what I want? She molded me into what she wanted, without considering what I wanted.
"I am nothing but a walking corpse.
The only purpose of my life is to kill that beast.
I just want to save myself, to find relief.
What did I do wrong? But she won't let go, she clings onto me, refusing to let go.
I really have no way out..." "Even so, it cannot become your reason for matricide!" I angrily exclaimed, "You have reasons to harm other people; but you have no reason to hurt your mother, she hasn't done anything wrong.
She gave birth to you, raised you, and she can't let go of you because she loves you! "She could have abandoned you like your father did, protect herself, and start a new life.
But she didn't.
She moved several times, worked multiple jobs to pay for your medical treatments, and went through hardships to keep your secret.
Because she didn't want you to do wrong, she didn't want you to walk down the wrong path.
"She knows you have an antisocial personality, but she never wavered; she fears the sight of execution, but she has never been afraid when she's by your side.
She loves you so much, trusts you so much, and yet this is how you repay her? Are you still human? You killed the person who loved you the most, you fucking demon, truly deserving of death.
Execution is too lenient for you!" Chen Yuan said, "Dr.
Lu, do you have any psychological counseling skills? Wouldn't this increase my psychological pressure before execution?" "I can only say that you have achieved your goal.
Today, it seems like you won't be executed.
You can delay your death for a few more days.
— So this was your goal.
You could have just said it directly, no need to fabricate such a long story, no amount of background information can whitewash your sins!" If there are new developments, there will naturally be a new trial.
All crimes will be punished together, and the execution will be postponed.
"So I can delay my death for a few more days?" Chen Yuan feigned surprise, "Then what if I confess to another crime in a few days? Can I delay my death again?" Listening to this, it seems like he regrets not killing more people.
To use the lives of the victims to extend his wicked existence, with one of them being his own mother, is simply without conscience.
"I was originally wondering why you were so calm before your execution, and now I understand, you truly are—" I clenched my teeth, wanting to continue scolding, but the words were stuck in my throat.
I angrily stood up, preparing to report this matter.
At this moment, my colleague brought Chen Yuan's file.
I threw it on the table and didn't intend to look at it again.
"Dr.
Lu, I haven't confessed anything," Chen Yuan called out to me.
"Also, are you sure you don't want to take a look at my file?" I glanced at him and hesitated for a moment before opening the file.
In just one glance, I saw the first entry—1990-1998, at the Sunshine Children's Welfare Home in Xishan County.
I checked it multiple times, and that's exactly what the file said.
What's going on? This doesn't make sense.
He clearly moved to Xishan County with his mother in 1995, so how could he have stayed at the orphanage in 1990? "I understand now..." I murmured.
"You're really making up stories.
Everything you've said today was just fabricated.
I had doubts from the beginning, and yet I ended up believing it until the end..." "No, I didn't make up stories," Chen Yuan put away his smile and said seriously, "I'll emphasize again, everything I've said is the truth.
You think I'm making up stories because there are many details I haven't explained.
If the details aren't clear, it naturally seems unreasonable." "Furthermore, Dr.
Lu, don't arbitrarily make assumptions and criticize me from a high and mighty position.
You don't have the qualification to criticize me," Chen Yuan said.
"There's still fifteen minutes left, let me continue."
