Chapter 15:
William's Suspicion
"I think he attempted suicide out of guilt," James said, staring at Benjamin, "It's strange, how did you know he would come to this place?" "It's simple.
Previously, I told him that Sophia's body was thrown into the river here.
Later on, he escaped from your police surveillance, so I figured he must have come here," Benjamin explained.
"Are you saying you purposely told him this was a dumping site?" "Yes." "Why would you do that?" "It's simple.
At that time, we hadn't found the SUV yet.
I just wanted to confirm whether he knew the deceased." "And now?" "Now it seems his relationship with the deceased is indeed unusual." "Are you implying he's the murderer?" "No, he may not be the murderer, but he's definitely involved in Sophia's death," James took out handcuffs and handcuffed William's hands, "Regardless, he's now under arrest.
I will take him back to the police station to see how much more we don't know."
"Cough cough—" William suddenly coughed, spat out some water, and slowly regained consciousness.
Upon seeing the handcuffs on his wrists and Benjamin and the other two, he instantly understood what was going on.
He lay on the ground and let out a long sigh of relief.
"Hey, do you plan on lying on the ground and playing dead forever?" James, angry at the thought of William concealing his relationship with the deceased, kicked him forcefully.
William let out a scream of pain but didn't complain.
He stood up from the ground, looked at the three of them, and finally locked eyes with Benjamin.
"You told me this was a dumping site, intending to lure me here.
Did you suspect that I was the killer all along?" "No, I just wanted to prove that you were lying," Benjamin replied.
"I'm lying?" "Yes, you concealed the truth.
For example, you knew the deceased, but you told the police that you had never seen her before finding her body." "I didn't lie.
I don't know her," William lowered his head, instinctively avoiding Benjamin's gaze.
Until now, he was still trying to conceal his relationship with Sophia.
James shouted, "Kid, don't even think about pulling any more tricks.
Sophia lived in Apartment 601, Building 5 of the North Bank District, and you were the security guard there.
There are rumors that you were her boyfriend."
What's even more bizarre is that you resigned right after Sophia died.
Do you dare say you don't know her now?" As he spoke, he took out William's work ID and shook it.
"What is this?" Every word James said struck William's heart like a small hammer.
When he saw his work ID in the hands of the police, he completely collapsed, bowing his head and saying nothing.
"Tell me, how did Sophia die?" James seized the opportunity to ask.
"I don't know," William said.
James reached out and pulled William up from the ground, yelling, "Kid, come with me to the police station.
I have ways to make you talk!"
William was taken to the police station, where James conducted an urgent interrogation.
But no matter what question he asked, William's answer was always the same: he didn't know.
This made James very frustrated, and he had to end this interrogation in anger.
"You seem to be in a bad mood," Benjamin said.
"How can my mood be good?" James vented his dissatisfaction, "I finally caught this kid, but he won't speak a word.
I really want to beat him up."
"Fortunately, you didn't.
That would only force him to confess."
"Brother, I really don't know what to do.
If only we had evidence to convict him."
"Convict who?"
"Of course, it's William!"
"What about Ethan and Alexander? Do you no longer suspect them of being the murderers?" James was stunned.
He had focused all his energy on William just now and had forgotten about these two guys.
Now that they were mentioned, he immediately felt a headache.
All three of them had strong suspicions of committing the crime, but there was no evidence to convict any of them.
"Damn it, who among these three killed Sophia? Who is the killer?"
"Do you know you made a very serious mistake?" Benjamin said.
"What mistake?" James asked.
"You shouldn't be impulsive while handling the case, and you shouldn't be too eager.
How long has it been since the report was received, and you already want to solve the case immediately, not knowing that doing so will only lead yourself to a dead end."
"So what should I do?" James admitted that he was a little impatient and eager to make a breakthrough.
"You should always stay calm, so you can objectively analyze the facts."
"Alright, I'll try my best." James took a deep breath, reminding himself to stay calm.
"That's the best approach.
Let's go, let's go meet Alexander." James thought of Ethan's phone, which contained a lot of evidence to prove that Alexander had threatened Ethan.
As long as he presented this evidence to Alexander, he wouldn't be able to escape.
When Alexander saw Benjamin and the others again, he didn't show much surprise.
Instead, he wore a mocking smile and said, "It seems like you've found evidence of my crime."
"What is it, are those fingerprints I left on the deceased?" James glared at Alexander.
At first, he sympathized with this guy, but now he only felt hatred.
He found Alexander increasingly annoying, especially with that expression on his face.
"Do you recognize it?" James waved Ethan's phone in front of Alexander.
Alexander shook his head.
James showed Alexander the intimate photos of Ethan and Sophia.
"Have you seen this photo before?" "These two adulterers!" Alexander stared at the screen and cursed.
Any man would have the same reaction when they see their wife being intimate with another man.
Alexander shook his head and said, "I've never seen this photo before." James anticipated that Alexander wouldn't cooperate, so he proceeded to show him those text messages.
"Did you send these?" "No," Alexander denied once again.
"Alexander!" James suddenly raised his voice.
"Do you still want to argue in the face of this solid evidence?" "I don't know what you're talking about," Alexander wasn't intimidated by James.
"You're the one who secretly took photos of Ethan and Sophia's intimate moments and used it to extort money from them.
At first, Ethan would comply with your demands, but your desire grew bigger and exceeded what Ethan could bear.
When he stopped giving you money, you became furious and killed Sophia! That's how things went, do you still want to deny it?" James started to accuse Alexander.
After hearing the accusations, Alexander didn't show any signs of nervousness.
Instead, he became unusually calm.
He stared at James and said, "Did Ethan tell you all of this? If you're only relying on Ethan's words, a single photo, and a few text messages to convict me, then I'm extremely disappointed in the investigative abilities of your police force.
Even if we were to go to court, I believe the judge would think you're wasting taxpayers' money!" "Alexander!" James was infuriated by Alexander's arrogance.
Just as he was about to give in to his anger, he remembered Benjamin's words.
He took a deep breath and forced himself to calm down again.
"So you're saying you don't admit to sending those photos and messages?" "Of course not, unless you have evidence to prove that they were sent by me," Alexander calmly replied.
"Alright then, listen to this." James played the recording of Ethan being demanded one million dollars.
"Now, what do you have to say?" "All I can say is this is absurd! That recording can only prove that someone was extorting money from Ethan.
I don't see how it relates to me.
What was your purpose in making me listen to that recording?" Alexander suddenly paused and then burst into laughter.
"Officer, you surely don't think that unpleasant voice in the recording belongs to me, do you?"
"I think even a three-year-old child would be able to tell that our voices are different.
Could it be that there's something wrong with your ears?" James snorted and said, "I do suspect that it's your voice.
You can simply use voice-changing software to alter your own voice." "Voice-changing software?" Alexander shook his head.
"Comrade officer, I have to admire your imagination.
Honestly, this is the first time I've heard of something that can change voices.
You should teach me how to play with it." James could hardly hold back and shouted, "Alexander, are you still not admitting it?" "Admit what? Admit that the unpleasant voice is mine? Please listen carefully again.
My voice is completely different from that voice," Alexander said.
James suddenly deflated.
Alexander was right, his voice was completely different from the one in the recording.
The photos and messages on Ethan's phone couldn't prove anything, nor could they prove any connection to Alexander.
James turned to look at Benjamin, hoping that Benjamin could give him some advice.
"I'm sorry for interrupting you," Benjamin unexpectedly said, then he turned to James and said, "You can let him go rest now."
