Chapter 14:
Retrieving the Phone
James, of course, would go and confirm if the two Williams were the same person, but right now he needed more information.
He took out his ID and said to Auntie Ava, "I'm a police officer, and I hope you can come to the police station with us to assist in the investigation." Auntie Ava, upon hearing that she had to go to the police station, quickly shook her hands in front of her chest and said rapidly, "No, no, no.
I don't know anything, those words earlier were just nonsense.
Just pretend you didn't hear anything!" After saying that, she turned around and ran away, and the onlookers scattered, not wanting to get involved in this troublesome matter.
"Auntie Ava, wait!" James wanted to chase after her, but Benjamin stopped him.
"Forget it, she can't run away anyway.
Let's first go to the security office and see what this William looks like," Benjamin said.
James saw that Aunt Ava had already gone far away, and he remembered that she said she lived in the same building as the deceased.
Finding her should be an easy task, so he nodded and walked towards the guard room with Benjamin and Emma.
Suddenly, Emma's phone rang.
It was a text message.
"The phone has been found," she said to Benjamin, "The item has been located." "Give it to me," Benjamin took the phone, replied to the text message, and then said, "Let's go."
The guard was still the old man they had seen before.
He was resting outside the gate, but as soon as he saw the three of them, he immediately stood up.
"It's you again?"
"I want to know the name of the security guard who resigned yesterday," James said.
The guard breathed a sigh of relief.
He had been worried that the police were coming to cause trouble for him, after all, the murder had happened in the community where he worked.
"William."
"Do you have his photo?"
"It should be on his work ID." The guard took out William's work ID from the house.
"Aunt Ava told me that William might be the killer.
Is it true?"
James took the work ID and saw the photo on it.
His face turned red as he felt fooled.
The person in the photo was indeed the William who had reported the case.
"It's really him.
He lied to us saying he didn't know the deceased!"
"Is he really the killer?" whispered the guard.
James didn't answer the guard's question, but handed the work ID to Benjamin.
"I want to immediately bring him to the police station!"
Upon hearing Aunt Ava mention the name William, Benjamin had already suspected it was the same person.
This also explained why he had noticed that William knew the deceased when they first met.
It was necessary to bring him back and find out the truth.
After making the call, James didn't feel as angry anymore.
He said to Benjamin, "I have ordered someone to arrest him.
Let's go back to the police station and wait for him."
At this moment, a taxi drove from the highway to the entrance of the community and honked at Benjamin and the others.
Upon seeing this, Benjamin handed William's work ID to James and walked towards the taxi.
"Hey, where are you going? We have a car!" James thought Benjamin wanted to take a taxi back to the police station.
The guard saw the three of them leaving and muttered to himself, "It seems that William is really the killer who fled in fear.
Ah, I never thought, that kid usually looks so weak, yet he dared to commit murder."
The taxi driver wore a large brimmed hat, but it couldn't hide his old face.
He looked to be in his fifties, but he had a lively spirit and always had a smile on his face.
When he saw Benjamin approaching, he voluntarily opened the passenger door.
Benjamin didn't say anything, got into the car, and closed the door.
"It seems I have to pay extra for the fare," James quickly opened the back door, got in, and Emma waited outside.
The taxi driver obviously knew Benjamin and took out a black Lenovo phone from his pocket, handing it to Benjamin.
"That kid just wanted to use it to make some extra money.
I've already taught him a lesson.
He won't take a customer's belongings again." "Thank you," Benjamin took the phone and pressed the power button.
The phone was intact, and the SIM card was still inside, allowing him to make calls.
James then realized that the phone in Benjamin's hand was the one Ethan had lost.
He looked at the taxi driver curiously.
"Who is he?" "Lao Wang.
He has been a taxi driver for over twenty years and is the oldest qualified taxi driver in the city.
Everyone in the taxi industry knows him, and only he could find our phone so quickly," Benjamin said while checking the content on the phone.
"Master Wang, thank you for helping us find the phone," James said gratefully.
If it weren't for him finding and returning the phone, James didn't know when he would have found it.
Lao Wang turned around, nodded at James, and smiled.
"You're welcome.
It's my debt to Benjamin.
A few years ago, a passenger falsely accused me of stealing his money, and Benjamin helped me solve the trouble." "I just happened to pass by, and that guy just wanted a free ride," Benjamin said casually.
"But he did end up paying and apologized to me." Lao Wang smiled proudly, still thinking that Benjamin had handled it beautifully.
"Found it!" Benjamin suddenly exclaimed.
"Where?" James' view was blocked by the partition in the taxi.
He quickly opened the door, ran to the front, and leaned against the car window to look.
The phone displayed a photo of Ethan and Sophia being intimate on the bed, along with several text messages demanding money and threats.
"Looks like he wasn't lying and kept this evidence," James said joyfully.
Benjamin dialed the number displayed in the text messages.
As he expected, the other person's phone was turned off.
"Give me the phone number.
I'll check with the communication company to see if the information left by the other person is Alexander," James said.
"It's useless.
Do you think he would be stupid enough to register with his own ID? The registration information must be fake," Benjamin continued to check the other contents on the phone and quickly found a recorded conversation.
"Prepare one million immediately.
This is the last time.
I will never bother you again." "I don't have that much money." "Don't play tricks with me, or I will plaster your happy photos all over the city!" "I really don't have that much money!" "I said, don't play tricks with me.
If you don't give me the money, I will make you suffer.
Killing you and that bitch is as easy as pie!" The recording was very short, with only five sentences.
Two were spoken by Ethan, and the other three were spoken by a hoarse voice that sounded completely different from Alexander's voice.
Benjamin replayed the recording, and James said, "It doesn't sound like Alexander's voice."
"I heard that there is software online that can change people's voices.
It seems to be called a voice converter.
As long as you download it on your phone, your voice will change.
Maybe he used this software," Emma said.
"That's possible," Benjamin listened carefully to the recording again.
At that moment, James' phone suddenly rang.
After he answered the call, he looked very angry and shouted loudly, "What are you all eating? Can't even keep an eye on a person! Find him quickly, he must be found, absolutely cannot let him escape!"
"What happened?" Benjamin asked.
"Damn it, that guy ran away!" James said excitedly.
"William?"
"It's him, he actually ran away right under my nose! Damn it, now someone says he's not the murderer, I absolutely don't believe it.
If it wasn't him killing those people, why did he run?"
"Perhaps there is another reason."
"What reason?"
"It's best to go and ask him in person."
Benjamin thanked Lao Wang again and got off the car.
"Let's go, I'll take you to find him."
"Do you really know where he is?" James looked at Benjamin with doubt.
After all, his people had been secretly monitoring William, but he still managed to escape.
How could Benjamin know his whereabouts when he had been with him all along?
"You'll know when we get there," Benjamin said as he walked forward.
"I hope you really know where he is," James followed behind him with suspicion.
Under Benjamin's command, James drove the car to the outskirts.
When the car arrived at the place where the body was found, he was somewhat surprised.
When they arrived at the stone bridge where the body was dumped, he was even more shocked and couldn't help but ask, "Why are we here?"
"Don't talk, turn off the car engine and headlights," Benjamin told James to stop at a distance from the stone bridge.
The night had quietly enveloped the earth, and after the headlights were turned off, it became pitch black around them.
Adding to this the fact that they all knew Sophia's body was thrown into the river from here, the atmosphere became somewhat eerie.
After a while, a figure appeared on the stone bridge, and it could vaguely be seen that it was William.
"It's him!" James exclaimed excitedly, wanting to rush over and grab William.
"Wait a little longer," Benjamin stopped James.
William stood on the stone bridge for a while, then suddenly jumped into the river.
"Damn it!" James opened the car door and rushed forward.
After running a few steps, he saw a figure pass by him at an astonishing speed and "plop" it jumped into the river.
"Emma, be careful!"
Emma grabbed William in the water.
Although he tried to resist, he was no match for Emma, who was not trained as a special forces soldier.
Within a few moves, he was knocked out, and then dragged to the shore.
James rushed into the water and, together with Emma, pulled William ashore.
He turned his head and saw Benjamin slowly walking over, dissatisfied as he said, "You seem to be not in a hurry at all.
Aren't you afraid this guy might drown?" "What's there to be afraid of? The river here is only one meter deep.
He won't drown," Benjamin took off his coat and draped it over Emma's shoulders, "How is he?" "He's fine, just knocked out by me.
He'll wake up soon," Emma tidied her hair while staring at William on the ground, "I can't understand why he would do something so reckless as jumping into the river."
