Chapter 27:
Relationship Breakdown
"You should go to the restroom and wash your face to calm down," Benjamin suggested.
James was too agitated, which was detrimental to handling the case.
"I do need to go to the restroom.
You know what? Reporters have been calling the police station incessantly in the past couple of days, driving me crazy!" James got up and walked out.
It was too much pressure for him to face such a high-profile murder case right after being promoted to captain.
He had to deal with the attacks and tests from public opinion.
Emma noticed that Benjamin had been chasing after Ethan and asked him a few questions earlier, so there must be some gains.
After James left, she asked, "Did you discover anything?"
Benjamin remained silent for a moment, then reached out and said, "I need to borrow your phone." Emma handed over her phone.
After Benjamin quickly sent a text message, he returned the phone and fell silent again.
Emma knew that Benjamin was contemplating the case, so she stood silently by his side and watched him.
He didn't snap out of it until James returned.
Having spent quite some time outside, James pushed the door open and exclaimed, "I've figured it out!"
"What have you figured out?" Emma asked.
"Who the real killer is!"
"Who is the real killer?"
"Ethan and Olivia, the couple!" James said confidently.
"Why them? What evidence do you have?" Emma felt that James had changed a lot after his trip to the restroom.
He even looked somewhat sinister when he spoke.
"Who else could it be besides them?" James retorted.
Then he continued, "We have four suspects in total.
When Alexander arrived at the North Shore community, Ethan had already cleaned up the scene and left with the body.
It's evident that he couldn't be the killer.
William is obviously a cowardly fool, only extorting money from women.
I absolutely don't believe he's the killer.
That leaves us with Ethan and Olivia.
One admits to cleaning up the scene and disposing of the body, while the other admits to having a dispute with the deceased and accidentally injuring them.
The killer must be one of them!"
"What evidence do you have?"
"What more evidence do we need? Both of them admitted it!"
James's determination to accuse Olivia and Ethan without solid evidence sparked a heated argument.
Emma hoped Benjamin could intervene and convince James otherwise.
However, James dismissed Benjamin's authority as a detective and claimed that he, as a police officer, had the final say.
Emma, feeling insulted, reminded James that it was he who sought their help to solve the case.
James responded with even more offensive remarks, suggesting that Emma and Benjamin were unwanted pests who should leave.
Emma, outraged, pointed out that James had approached them for assistance and now wanted them gone.
James, stubbornly asserting his authority, ordered them to leave immediately.
Emma, refusing to be intimidated, challenged James's position, stating that even the chief of police would not dare speak to them in such a manner.
James, undeterred, opened the door and demanded their departure.
Frustrated, Emma contemplated physical violence if James continued with his offensive words.
She no longer cared if they were in a police station or if James was a police officer.
James maintained a defiant posture, implying that he was unreachable and unapproachable.
Benjamin insisted once again that Olivia and Ethan were not the killers, to which James stubbornly repeated his belief and informed them that he had already alerted the press about a press conference to disclose the case details.
He also revealed his decision to release Alexander without considering Benjamin's objections.
Benjamin frowned and sternly criticized James for his rash actions, but James defended his decisions, claiming that it was already too late to reverse them.
"James had a stern and domineering look on his face as he said, 'Please leave, I don't need you anymore.' 'Fine, let's go!' Emma angrily pulled Benjamin out.
She thought James would regret it and come after them to stop them, but all she heard was the sound of the door slamming shut.
She stopped and, after standing there dumbfounded for two seconds, said to Benjamin, 'Don't blame him, he's under a lot of pressure.' 'What?' Benjamin seemed to have misheard.
'I mean, James is also going through a hard time.
He's been under a lot of pressure these past few days and made a wrong decision out of desperation.' Emma defended James.
'I didn't mean to blame him; I'm just thinking about who the real murderer could be,' Benjamin said.
As they spoke, two police officers escorted Alexander over.
Emma whispered, 'Look, it's him.' Benjamin looked at Alexander.
He had handcuffs on his hands, a furrowed brow, and deep in thought.
Obviously, he had no idea what awaited him this time.
Just then, James opened the door and walked out, shouting at the officers escorting Alexander, 'Why are you so slow? Why is Mr.
Zhao still in handcuffs? Hurry up and release him!' He then enthusiastically approached Alexander and said, 'Mr.
Zhao, I'm really sorry for what you've been through these past few days.
We have found the murderer of your wife.' Alexander didn't relax his furrowed brow because of James' words; instead, he looked at him with suspicion.
'Did you actually catch the killer?' 'Yes, the killer is currently locked up in the police station,' James said.
'Who is it?' 'Ethan and Olivia.' 'Them?' 'Yes, it's them.
Olivia found out about Ethan and your wife's affair, got very angry, and planned this.
She admitted to having a conflict with your wife.
We also compared the DNA from your wife's nails with Olivia's, and it matched.
Although we still lack the most conclusive evidence to prove that they killed your wife, based on the existing evidence and confessions, we can infer that they are the ones.
In the future, when it goes to court, the judge will definitely convict them.
Also, I've already informed the press and prepared a press conference on this matter, so I'm letting you know in advance and hope you can attend.' 'That's great!' Alexander finally relaxed his furrowed brow and said excitedly, 'My wife can finally rest in peace!' 'They are not the killers,' Benjamin suddenly said.
James, as if just noticing Benjamin and Emma there, looked displeased and said, 'What are you two still doing here?' 'This is the police station, not your home.
Why can't we be here?' Emma said angrily.
However, Alexander was very interested in Benjamin's words and asked, 'What did you just say?' 'I said the police made a mistake.
Ethan and Olivia are not the killers; the real killer is someone else.'"
"Benjamin said to Alexander, 'You're not a police officer?'
'I'm a detective,' Alexander replied.
'I always thought you were a police officer,' Alexander glanced at James while speaking.
'Pay no attention to them, let's get ready.
We have to meet the reporters later,' James said, then cast a bored look at Benjamin and Emma.
'Alright.' As Alexander left, he turned back to look at Benjamin again, still thinking about what he had said earlier.
Emma exclaimed angrily, 'This James, did he get hit by a car? Suddenly he became so stupid!'
'Let's go,' Benjamin walked ahead.
'Where are we going?' Emma caught up and asked.
'To attend the press conference,' Benjamin said."
