Chapter 28:
Press Conference
The press conference started on time.
In addition to the journalists from the local TV stations and newspapers, there were many journalists from other cities and even two from the province.
It seemed that many people attached great importance to this murder case.
The press conference went smoothly, with James answering all the questions from the journalists.
He described the process of handling the case over the past two days like an exciting suspense novel, providing the reporters with excellent material.
'So, the police have already determined that the culprits are Ethan and Olivia?' a journalist asked.
'Who else could it be?' James countered, 'Based on the existing evidence, it can be fully confirmed that they are the culprits.
Olivia is the mastermind, while Ethan is the accomplice.'
At this moment, Benjamin, who had been hiding behind the journalists, stood up and shouted, 'The culprits are not them!'
Startled by the loud shout, the journalists sensed the news value and turned to take photos of Benjamin, ignoring James.
Emma stood in front of Benjamin and shouted at the journalists, 'Don't take photos, don't take photos!'
'Who are you?'
'Are you a police officer too?'
'Did you just say the culprits are not Ethan and Olivia?'
'What evidence do you have to claim that they are not the culprits?'
...
Every journalist was filled with doubts about Benjamin.
'Don't take photos, ask questions one by one, or else we won't answer anything!' Emma alone couldn't stop the journalists' siege.
Just when James was feeling smug, Benjamin jumped out to cause trouble, just like someone enjoying a sumptuous lunch and finding a fly wrapped in their food.
He felt a lump in his throat and angrily shouted, 'How did you all get in here? Someone, quickly get them out!'
The journalists perceived the news value once again, knowing that there must be a story behind it.
They turned to take photos of James while presenting their own questions:
'Captain James, may I ask who these two people are and why you want to kick them out?'
'They are saying Ethan and Olivia are not the culprits.
Do they have any evidence?'"
"......" Faced with the reporters' questions, James was at a loss for words and stood there awkwardly.
"This is Benjamin, the great detective from Benjamin Studio.
I think some of you might have heard of him.
He has solved numerous cases for the police," Emma exclaimed, not forgetting to promote the "Benjamin Studio." "He was also invited by the police this time to assist in solving the case."
"The great detective from Benjamin Studio?"
"He is Benjamin?"
"So he's Detective Benjamin?"
"I heard he solved many cases that the police couldn't crack!"
The reporters once again surrounded Benjamin, and many of them had heard of Benjamin's name and the cases he had solved.
"Captain James, may I confirm if the distinguished detective was invited by the police to assist in solving this case?" A reporter from the provincial newspaper asked James.
"Yes, but our partnership has already ended," James replied.
"Why did it end? Was it because the case was already solved, or did you have disputes in the investigation?" The reporter seized this sensitive topic and questioned James.
"Well..." James was rendered speechless once again by the question.
"Great detective, could you answer this question?" The provincial newspaper reporter turned the focus to Benjamin.
Taking this opportunity, Emma shouted loudly, "Please refrain from taking photos, ask one question at a time, or else we won't answer any questions." Each reporter was highly interested in this sensitive topic and wanted to know what had happened between Benjamin and the police.
In order to obtain valuable news clues, they finally quieted down.
Emma was very pleased with the reporters' behavior and smiled, saying, "Benjamin doesn't like being photographed.
Please refrain from taking photos during the questioning.
If anyone disobeys, we will leave immediately.
Alright, those with questions, please raise your hands." The reporters eagerly raised their hands, and Emma gestured for the previous provincial newspaper reporter to ask the first question.
"Great detective, please answer my previous question.
Did you and the police end your partnership because of disagreements in your opinions on the case?" The provincial newspaper reporter persisted with this question.
"That's correct, we indeed had disagreements, and it was because of these disagreements that our partnership ended," Benjamin nodded and admitted.
"What were the disagreements between you?" The provincial newspaper reporter followed up.
Emma immediately interjected, "Sorry, each person can only ask one question.
We must give other reporters a chance to ask." The provincial newspaper reporter sat down disappointedly.
Emma indicated for another journalist to ask a question.
"Is it true that when you said they are not the culprits, you were referring to Ethan and Olivia?" the reporter asked.
"Yes," Benjamin replied.
"Now it's your turn to ask a question," Emma signaled to the third reporter.
"Do you have evidence to prove that Ethan and Olivia are not the culprits?"
"Based on the evidence currently held by the police, it can be inferred that at the time of the incident, Olivia did indeed have a dispute with the deceased Sophia.
During the dispute, Sophia collided with the coffee table and fell to the ground.
Olivia mistakenly believed that she was dead." Benjamin paused and glanced at James.
James was now extremely angry, his eyes bulging twice as large as usual.
If there weren't so many reporters present, he would definitely have rushed over to cover Benjamin's mouth.
Benjamin shifted his gaze away from James and spoke to the reporters, "This is also why the police claimed that Olivia confessed to the crime.
In fact, we all know that the victim did not die from a blow to the back of the head, but was suffocated by someone covering her mouth and nose with their hands.
In other words, Olivia did not kill Sophia, she only accidentally harmed her."
"Could it not be that after Sophia fell unconscious, she was suffocated by Olivia?" James loudly objected.
"Captain James, your memory is truly poor.
Don't forget that when Olivia and Sophia were arguing, someone was hiding in the closet and saw Olivia leave after Sophia fell.
How could she have suffocated Sophia?"
"What about Ethan? Even if Olivia didn't kill Sophia, it must have been Ethan who arrived at the scene, found Sophia alive, and then killed her!"
"Why would he kill Sophia?"
"It was Olivia who told him to do so."
"Murder is not a trivial matter.
Do you think Ethan would follow Olivia's orders just because she asked? For example, if I asked you to kill someone, would you do it?"
"Of course not." James immediately realized that he had fallen into Benjamin's trap, "Ethan is different from me.
He may appear to be a company owner on the surface, but in reality, Olivia controls all the financial power.
Olivia uses this as leverage to force him to kill Sophia."
"Even if what you say is possible, the police overlooked a very important clue."
"What clue?"
"That would be the victim's jewelry."
"Jewelry?"
"That's right.
Based on the traces left by the victim, it can be confirmed that she owned some valuable jewelry.
However, after her death, these jewelry went missing.
This indicates that during the time from Olivia leaving to Ethan's arrival at the scene, someone else also arrived at the scene and took the victim's jewelry.
In other words, the person who took the jewelry is the real killer!" The press conference turned into a heated debate between Benjamin and James.
Benjamin suddenly mentioned the victim's jewelry, hitting James like a heavy blow and leaving him speechless.
"Captain James, can we conclude that someone did appear during the time between Olivia's departure and Ethan's arrival, took the victim's jewelry, and committed the murder to cover it up, just as Detective Benjamin said?"
"The provincial newspaper reporter seized this opportunity to ask a question.
"Yes.
Captain James, please answer this question," other reporters followed suit in making a commotion.
James's face turned pale, sweat streamed down his forehead, his legs weakened, and he quickly reached out and pressed his hand on the desk to prevent himself from falling.
"Things couldn't possibly be like that.
We have sufficient evidence to prove that Ethan and Olivia are the real murderers." "Can you present this evidence?" Benjamin asked further.
"Well..." James glared at Benjamin with hatred, wanting to rush over and give him a punch to shut him up forever.
"In any case, we have evidence to prove that the victim's jewelry was taken by Ethan." "That's ridiculous," Benjamin sneered, addressing the reporters, "During this time, I've been with the police and they have thoroughly searched Ethan's company, home, and any possible hidden places.
Sadly, they didn't find any so-called evidence.
Why should we believe that Ethan took the victim's jewelry?" "Those pieces of jewelry were taken by Ethan.
He must have hidden them somewhere secret, we just haven't found them yet," James's words were somewhat unreasonable, "Besides, even if the jewelry wasn't taken by Ethan, we know who took them." "Who?" a reporter asked.
"William, the victim's boyfriend," James pointed the finger at William, thinking that by doing so, he could turn the tide in his favor, "William comes from a poor family, so he must have taken those pieces of jewelry." "William? Do you have any evidence to support your claim?" the reporter pressed.
"Well...
we will definitely find those pieces of jewelry," James deliberately avoided this topic.
"This case has many doubts.
Even the victim's jewelry hasn't been found, yet they have rushed to convict Ethan and Olivia.
Isn't this a bit hasty?" Benjamin asked.
"Well..." James's voice grew weaker.
He was fed up and didn't want to chase Benjamin away.
He only wanted to escape from this place.
"Captain James, there are still many doubts in this case, yet you have hastily accused Olivia and Ethan.
Isn't that too reckless?" the provincial newspaper reporter pursued.
"Is it the police's standard procedure to convict suspects without any actual evidence?" immediately after, another reporter from the provincial headquarters asked.
"We have evidence," James reluctantly replied.
"If you have evidence, can you show it to us?" the reporter pressed.
James was once again speechless.
He saw Benjamin and Emma turning to leave, felt angry at how they had pushed him into this desperate situation, and shouted indignantly, "Where do you think you're going? Hey, stop right there, I'm not done with you!"
"Benjamin and Emma didn't stop their footsteps, nor did James have the energy to stop them.
He was already surrounded by journalists, and just dealing with these difficult reporters was enough for him.
After leaving the police station, Emma sighed and said, 'Now we have really offended James.
I don't think we will cooperate again in the future.'
'That's not necessarily true.
Who knows what will happen in the future,' Benjamin smiled contentedly, as if the conflict between him and James didn't exist at all.
